Paul Tournier has practised medicine in Geneva since 1928, as a physician who acquired psychiatric training and experience because he learned that many of his patients needed help going deeper than drugs or surgery. Many of his books are in paperback editions, including A Doctor's Casebook in the Light of the Bible, The Meaning of Persons, Escape from Loneliness, The Adventure of Living, The Person Reborn and A Place for You.

In The Strong and the Weak Dr Tournier maintains that people should not be classified as strong and weak. We are all strong towards some, weak towards others, and whether our initial reactions are aggressive or escapist we all need to learn psychological courage and spiritual wisdom. "This thesis is illustrated by a wealth of example drawn from the author's psychiatrical experience, and every pastor will greatly benefit from reflection upon the cases which Dr Tournier describes" (Sherwin Bailey in the Church of England Newspaper). "This is a book not only for pastors, sociologists, teachers and leaders, but for everybody. We are all involved in the struggle represented under Paul Tournier's heading. This book will open our eyes to our own condition, as well as to that of others" (Methodist Recorder).
