The silver chair - C.S. Lewis
The silver chair - C.S. Lewis
This is a further story about Narnia, the land first discovered by four children in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
Jill Pole's adventures in Narnia started quite unexpectedly one dreary autumn day as ash was crying unhappily behind the school gym, and all because of a boy called Eustace. For as Eustace tried to explain, he was different from the boy he had been last term: in the holidays he had been "right out of the world." And in a short time that was where Jill found herself too, in a turret room of the Castle of Cair Paravel, looking west into the strange land of Narnia, now menaced by an evil power which already had the King's heir in its grip.
Readers of C.S. Lewis' earlier books will be aware of his skill in describing the adventures which await travellers such as Jill and Eustace in the land of Narnia as they go forth now at the summons of Aslan the lion to do battle with the evil magic. "C.S. Lewis makes us believe in Narnia; in the words, the evocative names and the finely realised landscapes with which he fills the eye of the imagination. In moments of joy, of fear, and of poetic vision, this is a very real country." (Margarey Fisher in Intent Upon Reading.)
This is a tale too of humour, tension and poetry as Jill and Eustace carry out their task on the back of owls, in the midst of giants and in the company of their ever-faithful friend Puddlegum the Marsh-Wiggle.
