From childhood, Sir Laurens van der Post had been fascinated by the Bushmen – the aboriginal inhabitants of South Africa, who even then were rapidly becoming extinct. In 1957, he led an expedition over the Kalahari Desert in search of the remnants of this unique people. Natural obstacles, and certain human failings, nearly caused the expedition to come to grief. But, after arduous travelling and many setbacks, a community of Bushmen was discovered. Laurens van der Post describes their circumstances, customs, lore and nature with affection and imaginative sympathy, bringing home the remarkable qualities of these archaic, doomed, yet vividly alive survivors of an ancient world.
