The horse of Darius - Justin Cartwright (First edition)
The horse of Darius - Justin Cartwright (First edition)
The first three bullets appeared not to have hit the Shah, except that his cap flew off, as if attached to a hidden wire. Arai fired again. This time there was a spurt of blood from the Shah's upper lip. Arai advanced a pace, now aware that they were quite alone. The Shah began to leap and feint, moving this way and that. Arai fired again. The bullet struck the Shah in the shoulder, spinning him round but not stopping his curious dance. Arai raised the pistol and took careful aim at the middle of the blue serge uniform, still bobbing about. He pulled the trigger. It would not move. He shook the pistol and tried again. It was jammed.
For a moment, he stood facing the Shah, who was trying to wipe the blood from his face. The military, realizing that his pistol was now harmless, began to close in. Arai ran, but he was shot in the leg by a major. He fell to the ground.
Immediately he staggered to his feet and hobbled back towards the soldiers. He threw his pistol at the Shah's Rolls Royce contemptuously and flung his arms in the air.
'I surrender,' he shouted.
It was not to be.
