The Decameron - Giovanni Boccaccio
The Decameron - Giovanni Boccaccio
"An island of pleasure in a sea of despair..."
In 1348 A.D. a hideous plague - called the Black Death - struck Florence and wiped out three of every four people in the city. It is against this setting of horror and pestilence that Boccaccio relates his immortal tales of the Decameron. For as the framework for molding his pieces together, Boccaccio chose ten young people, seven women and three youths, who fled from Florence to a villa on the slopes of Fiesole. There, to amuse each other and to while away the time, each one told a tale a day for ten days. The results of their storytelling are the one hundred lusty and ribald tales in the Decameron - tales which have never been surpassed in any age.
