The Consolation of Philosophy, which became one of the most influential books of the Middle Ages, was composed by Boethius (c. A.D. 480-524) after he had been imprisoned by the Gothic emperor, Theodoric. His last and greatest work mingles verse and prose in a sacred dialogue with his "nurse", Philosophy, reflecting the doctrines of Plato and Aristotle, of the Stoics and Neoplatonists; nevertheless Boethius was a Christian and his lonely contemplation of good and evil, fate and freewill, the fickleness of fortune and the nature of happiness later suffused the minds of such poets as Dante and Chaucer.
