Spirits Rebellious is an extension and a continuation of that previous volume of stories, Nymphs of the Valley. The stories were completed in 1908, fifteen years before The Prophet was published. The first, named "Wardé-Al-Hani" tells of a girl who leaves her husband and his wealth to live in poverty with the man she loves. Another story, "The Cry of Graves", repeats the timeless message of the oppression of the weak at the hands of the strong. "The Bridal Couch", which follows, is the story of a wedding feast which began in joy and ended in sorrow.

In Nymphs of the Valley the mad shepherd boy Yuhanna was Gibran's mouthpiece; here it is Kahlil the Heretic, a robuster character who lives to see right triumph over wrong.

The imagery and symbolism of these stories are rich and effective: their mystic and philosophic message shines like a Lebanese moon among silver clouds.
