Unlike poets, after-dinner speakers are made, not born. In this anthology - a sequel and supplement to Unaccustomed as I am - Mr. Kent Wright has collected a large number of wise and witty sayings, and of amusing and sometimes nonsensical stories which may assist the after-dinner speaker. they are arranged under about one hundred separate headings, so that the material may be found on almost any subject on which a speech may conceivably have to be made. There are sections on doctors and lawyers, on dons, painters, politicians, scientists, preachers, motorists, farmers, civil servants, journalists, and, of course, on 'the ladies'. There are, too, sections on dogs, cats, horses, money, marriage, children, town and country, food, games and conversation.

In the Introduction to this anthology the compiler expresses the hope that his book may not only assist those who wish to become proficient after-dinner speakers, but others who have never made, and never intend to make, an after-dinner speech, but who wish sometimes, after their day's work, to sink comfortably into their armchairs and - relax with a smile!
