Prof. R. E. van der Ross has applied the incisive mind of the scientist, alternately dispassionate and touched by true emotion, to the myths that have grown up about what is called the Coloured people of South Africa and shown them for the myths they are. Out of these myths have grown attitudes towards the Coloured people assumed by other racial groups in the country, finally resulting in artificial attitudes by the Coloured people towards themselves and others. The author is as objective as he is dispassionate, although, being himself one of the Coloured people, he can also be subjective; but he never fails to be conscious of his own subjectivity, and therefore his judgements and his views of the future communicate the truth of his own convictions.
