Jock and Fitz - Compiled by Cecily Niven
Jock and Fitz - Compiled by Cecily Niven
The diamond jubilee of the publication of that ever-young st0ry Jock of the Bushveld fell in 1967. Jock is a true account of early pioneering days in South Africa, written by Sir Percy FitzPatrick, who recounted some of the incidents and adventures which befell him and his bull terrier, the immortal Jock.
These stories were told to his children, Cecily, Nugent, Alan and Oliver, and it was largely through the persuasion of Rudyard Kipling - who was a family friend - that Percy FitzPatrick was dragooned into writing the narrative which was subsequently published. The success of Jock of the Bushveld was immediate, and the story has continued to appeal to countless thousands of children (and their parents!) since 1907 to the present day. There have been numerous editions in several languages, and the total number of copies printed of Jock's story is over three quarters of a million.
Little has been published about the details of how the story came to be written, or of the artist, Edmund Caldwell, who drew the superb illustrations which have done so much to embellish the great story. The author's daughter, Cecily, has remedied his deficiency, and this volume is published as a commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of the first publication of Jock's story, to give the background of the well-loved book.
