Ingrid Jonker is one of the most iconic figures in Afrikaans literature, a status that has been recently confirmed by the biographical  film Black Butterflies. In 1994, at the opening of the first demographic parliament, Nelson Mandela read out her famous poem 'Die Kind' ('The child'), and described her as 'an Afrikaner woman who transcended a particular experience and became a South African, an African and a citizen of the world.'

This fine biography tells the story of Ingrid Jonker in the political and cultural context of her time, provides sensitive insights into her poetry and considers the reasons for the enduring fascination with her life and death. It convincingly shows the enormous impact her work has had on many South Africans, writers and ordinary readers alike.
