Oliver Twist sou nie hierdie lewe gekies het nie. Nadat sy ma gesterf het tydens sy geboorte, word hy groot by die kwaai mevrou Mann; later moet hy by ’n doodkismaker gaan werk en tussen doodkiste slaap. Hier word hy só mishandel dat hy wegloop. 

Op die strate ontmoet hy die Glibberige Kalant en die gemene Willem Slibbes. Saam met die bose Femel, met die klompie straatkinders wat vir hom werk, wil hulle hom oplei as dief. Die lewe raak onhoudbaar vir Oliver. Maar hoe kan hy wegkom uit die boewe se greep? En waarheen sal hy gaan in die grote Londen waar daar geen genade vir ’n weeskind is nie?

Dié storie van goed en kwaad sal lesers tot aan die einde boei en laat naels kou.
