So skryf Mathews Phosa, spreker van nege tale, oor die taal waarin hy sy skoolopvoeding ontvang het, en wat hy as "n soort moedertaal in sy lewe beskou.

Sy digkuns is gelukkig nooit gesien as 'n manier om "die taal van die onderdrukker" polities te probeer maak nie. Poësie het 'n manier om deur ideologiese versperrings te breek en harte te raak. "Vandag is Afrikaans saam met die ander inheemse tale bevry, en die digter doen 'n beroep: "Kom ons oefen ons tong los, sodat ons deur ons pragtige, rou, ritmiese tale die wonde van die verlede kan help genees."

Vanweë sy druk politiese program bestempel Mathews Phosa homself deesdae as 'n "sigaretdoos- en notulepapierdigter." Agter op 'n sigaretdoos staan gekrabbel: "n Mens is nie die ander man se enslavemente nie ... apartheid moet stop vir almal ... wit apartheid is so sleg soos swart apartheid."

Sy gedigte is 'n snelskryf waardeur diep verskuilde gevoelens tot uiting kom: vernedering, woede, verset, triomf, en uiteindelik verootmoediging in gebed.
