With the woman on his mind and a deep uneasiness in his heart, Spencer Grant drove through the glistening night, searching for the red door. The old paint had surely been faded.

Spencer is a damaged man – physically and emotionally scarred. An outsider, his only companion is a mixed-breed dog inappropriately named Rocky. A chance meeting with a woman in a bar shatters his isolation. She too is a loner with secrets. Coming together again later by a series of startling events, they find themselves fleeing the long arm of a clandestine, illegal and immensely powerful enemy. The woman is hunted for the world-shattering information she possesses and the man is sought because he finds himself obsessed with helping the woman.

The agent in charge of the pursuit is possessed of an uncommon madness and cruelty as he strives to make a perfect world. He kills with great compassion, for he feels that he is freeing his victims from their imperfect lives. Because he employs access to the government's electronic information banks, surveillance systems and futuristic weapons, he is virtually unstoppable, indestructible – the brazen face of an insidiously fascistic future. But he has never before encountered the likes of his current quarry. Both Spencer Grant and the mysterious woman to whom he is inexorably drawn are shaped by dreadful events in their past. Both are emboldened by their dark experiences to fight recklessly for survival – their own and each other's.
