Born free: A lioness of two worlds - Joy Adamson (Story of Elsa #1)
Joy Adamson, who was born in Austria, has spent twenty-five years in Kenya. She is the wife of the former Senior Game Warden of the Northern Frontier District. Although in her books it is her love and knowledge of wild animals which are most strikingly illustrated, she has many other interests—music, botany and, in particular, painting.
A well-known painter, she was commissioned by the Government of Kenya to paint Africans belonging to all the different tribes wearing their traditional costume. In order to make this record she had the unique experience of living for eight years alone among the tribes. Later she lectured in English and Swedish universities on tribal life and customs.
Born Free, the amazing story of Elsa, the lioness which Mrs. Adamson brought up and then trained for wild life, and its sequel, Living Free, which tells the story of Elsa and her cubs, have been translated into sixteen languages. In Forever Free, which was published in November, 1962, Mrs. Adamson writes about the death of Elsa and tells the exciting story of how the cubs went through many dangers before they could be rescued and finally released in the Serengeti Park in Tanganyika.
